Advice for caregivers

Signs to look out for include:

  • Changes in behaviour such as paranoia, forgetfulness or confusion
  • Poor self-hygiene, unwashed clothes, unkempt surroundings
  • Being unable to manage every day requirements such as paying bills, keeping things tidy or safe
  • Not eating properly or low activity levels
  • Although these signs on their own don’t mean you should necessarily place someone into care, they do suggest you should at least discuss the option. It is better to take action rather than ignore the problem.

Putting someone into care

Talking with a loved one or partner about the option of moving into care should be approached in a unforced way. Take time to consider what support is available in your community, and the level of need which has to be met. Sometimes it helps to have a trained medical professional assist. The main consideration is the well-being of the person who requires care and support.

Very often elderly people may feel they are a burden on their children or family members. Family members may feel that they are forcing their loved ones out. Feelings of guilt or abandoning someone are normal, but placing someone into a care home where they can be well looked after and surrounded by others in a similar position can be the best thing.

There is also the question of how to pay for care and this can sometimes be a tricky question to answer. Care costs can be significant so take time to learn about costs and how this will affect your financial situation.

How we can help

If you are thinking of placing a loved one into care we are here to support you. At Highgate Lodge we can discuss any concerns you have and point you in the right direction. Our team is trained to help make your decision as easy as possible. Just call us 01922 646168 or drop us an email at info@highgatelodgecarehome.co.uk.

Joining Highgate Lodge

If you’re thinking of joining Highgate then the best way to decide if it’s right for you is to come and see us. We welcome residents and their families to come down for the day and experience the home for yourself. We think this is a great way for you to really get a feel for the home and get any questions you have answered.

On your first day at Highgate we will give you a guided tour of the home, showing you the rooms and all of the facilities available. You will then be introduced to the other residents and staff. And then you will be invited to have a meal with us. We feel this is the best way for you to make your mind up about wanting to stay with us, and if everything goes well you can move in as soon as the next day.

Can family visit?

Your family can definitely come to see you anytime you are at Highgate. Whether that’s on your first day when you come to see us, or when you’ve finally moved in, we are always happy for family members to visit. The home is open 7 days a week for family members to visit though we do ask that you try to avoid meal times where possible.

Our fees and paying for care

At Highgate Lodge we understand paying for care can be a significant cost for any family. That’s why we do our best to offer the flexibility to enable individuals to access care which meets their needs. To ensure Highgate is the right place for you or a loved one our managers will arrange to carry out an assessment. Once all arrangements have been confirmed, we aim to make the move as smooth and comfortable as possible.

Our prices vary according to the type and size of room you choose. Fees can be paid monthly or weekly via direct debit, bank transfer or cheque. When you first come to stay with us there will be a four week trial period, after which, if you like the home, we will sign a permanent contract.
